Scroll zkEVM Guide: 5 Steps to Experience L2 Dapps and on-chain Games
Scroll zkEVM Beginner's Guide
This article will introduce beginners to how to interact with the decentralized application (L2) on the Layer 2 network (Dapps). We will take Scroll zkEVM as an example to explore how to start using this platform and interact with Ethereum L2 Dapps. The skills in this guide are theoretically applicable to any other Layer 2 network. For demonstration, we will use an on-chain tic-tac-toe game running on the Scroll L2 network.
Preparation: Install a cryptocurrency wallet
If you have already installed a cryptocurrency wallet, you can skip this step. Otherwise, please install a wallet application suitable for your browser or mobile device.
Step 1: Configure the Scroll L2 Testnet and Goerli Testnet
The Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet. This is a Layer 2 network compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which means that smart contracts written for Ethereum can be directly deployed on Scroll zkEVM. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Ethereum L1 Goerli test network. The Scroll L2 network sends batch transactions to the Goerli L1 network for final confirmation. This design ensures the security of the Ethereum L1 network while achieving scalability, as not every transaction needs to be published on the Ethereum mainnet.
You can follow the official guide to add the Scroll L2 network and Goerli network to your cryptocurrency wallet.
Step 2: Obtain Goerli Testnet ETH
After setting up the network in your wallet, you need to obtain some Goerli ETH from a faucet. There are multiple faucets to choose from, each with different features and limitations. You can select one or more faucets to acquire sufficient test ETH.
Step 3: Transfer ETH from Goerli to Scroll L2
After obtaining Goerli ETH, the next step is to transfer some ETH to the Scroll L2 testnet. You can complete this operation using the bridge interface provided by the official source. Follow the instructions on the page to transfer ETH to your address on the Scroll L2 testnet. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.
Step Four: Experience the On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game
Once your ETH is successfully transferred to Scroll L2, you can start experiencing the on-chain tic-tac-toe game. Visit the game webpage, connect your wallet, and create a new game. Since this is a multiplayer game, you need to add another player's address, or you can use your second wallet as an opponent.
After creating the game, select your game from the list to start. This game also has an interesting feature: if you make a mistake at any point or do not want to lose the game, you can reset the game at any time.
Step 5 (Optional): Explore Other Dapps on Scroll L2
If you want to try more Dapps and games on Scroll, you can check the official Dapps list, which includes various decentralized applications running on Scroll L2.
Through this beginner's guide, you should be able to start exploring Dapps on Scroll zkEVM and other Layer 2 networks. As you deepen your understanding of these technologies, you will be better equipped to comprehend and engage with the rapidly evolving blockchain ecosystem.
