Insiders: Russian hackers have infiltrated the U.S. court system for years to steal sealed documents.
On August 15, Jin10 data reported that, according to a survey report obtained by the organization and two informed sources, hackers linked to the Russian government have long infiltrated the electronic record system of U.S. courts, stealing sensitive judicial documents that judges had ordered to be sealed. This intrusion analysis report indicates that the attackers have been obtaining information that should have been protected for many years. They implemented the intrusion by stealing user credentials and exploiting security vulnerabilities in outdated servers of the federal judicial system, specifically searching for sealed documents. Although the report does not explicitly identify the attackers, investigators found evidence suggesting that the hackers are supported by the Russian government. It remains unclear when the hackers initially infiltrated and when the court system detected the anomaly. One source indicated that the judiciary hired a cybersecurity company last fall to assist in addressing the issue.
