A British man has been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly selling illegally obtained data on dark web marketplaces. The economic losses caused by this case are estimated to exceed $25 million, shocking the cybersecurity community.

The suspect named Kai West is accused of operating under the alias 'IntelBroker' on dark web forums, engaging in illegal data trading. The Southern District Attorney's Office of New York has formally charged him, accusing him of participating in a series of serious cyber crimes.

It is reported that West collaborated with an online crime gang to hack and steal sensitive data from multiple companies, including telecom companies and internet service providers. They then sold this stolen data on the dark web market, with prices reaching over 2 million dollars.

The breakthrough in the case came from a secret transaction. An undercover officer purchased data from IntelBroker for the equivalent of $250 in Bitcoin. After the transaction was completed, West provided a data packet containing three sets of administrator-level usernames and passwords, which directly led to his prosecution.

West was arrested in France this February, and the U.S. is currently seeking to extradite him. FBI Assistant Director Christopher Raia described West as a 'serial hacker,' noting that he was involved not only in data theft but also in illegal financial transactions.

This case has sparked widespread concern about cybersecurity. As the degree of digitization deepens, the security of personal and corporate data has become increasingly important. This case also highlights the challenges and determination faced by law enforcement in combating transnational cybercrime.

Cybersecurity experts call on all sectors to be vigilant, strengthen data protection measures, and urge the international community to enhance cooperation to jointly address the increasingly complex threats of cybercrime.
