EigenLayer Launches EigenCloud: Opening a New Era of Verifiable Economy

EigenLayer officially launched the revolutionary new platform EigenCloud. To demonstrate its firm confidence in the long-term value of the project, a well-known investment institution purchased up to $70 million worth of EIGEN tokens, making another strategic investment in EigenLayer.

This is not just a product launch and a round of financing; it marks EigenLayer's official transition from a foundational security-sharing protocol to a platform-level ecosystem that empowers countless applications.

Why is EigenCloud needed?

Our digital life currently has a certain degree of "division".

On one hand, we have blockchain Web3, whose advantage is "trust". For example, DeFi on Ethereum relies entirely on code for lending, without worrying about the platform running away with funds. However, its problems are also very obvious: it is cumbersome and has limited functionality. Complex calculations consume a large amount of Gas, not to mention running AI models or large games. Specific limitations include:

  • Software scarcity: Most Web2 open-source software libraries are not usable on the blockchain.

On the other hand, we have cloud computing (Web2), such as some well-known cloud service providers. Its advantage is "omnipotent". Almost all functionalities can be realized, including AI, big data, social media, etc. But its fatal flaw is: users must unconditionally trust centralized large companies.

EigenCloud aims to solve this "splitting". Its innovative idea is to transfer complex application logic from the bulky blockchain to the powerful cloud (off-chain) for execution, and then use the "trust" mechanism of the blockchain to provide credible endorsement for the work done in the cloud. This way, a win-win situation can be achieved.

The Three Core Components of EigenCloud

Taking the development of a "decentralized takeaway platform" called TrustEat as an example, explain how the three core components of EigenCloud simplify the project development process.

  1. EigenDA ( archive )
  • Function: A high-capacity, low-cost "public data wall". All inputs, outputs, and processes of off-chain computations are made public and transparent here.
  • Application Example: Record all information for each order, including order time, dish price, rider route, delivery time, and user reviews, etc.
  1. EigenVerify ( General Court )
  • Function: A "Universal Arbitration Court" that is always available is key to achieving "verifiable" results. Arbitration can be convened when there is a dispute over off-chain computation results.
  • Application Example:
    • Objective Dispute: If there is an error in the bill amount, EigenVerify will recalculate.
    • Subjective Disputes: In cases of user negative review disputes, EigenVerify's validators will form a "jury" to verify relevant evidence and vote to make a decision.
  1. EigenCompute ( One-Click Deployment Platform & Lego Factory )
  • Function:
    • Simplify the development process: Package the underlying complex operations, and developers only need to package the code into a Docker container for deployment.
    • Support for module combinations: Allows developers to easily combine and use existing AVS (Authenticated Verification Services), improving development efficiency.
  • Cross-chain compatibility: Developers only need to build and deploy once, and the results can be used by multiple blockchains.
  • Application Example:
    • Directly call ready-made "AI Pricing AVS", "Data Processing AVS" or "Cross-Chain Bridge AVS" etc.
  • Package your own code and the code that calls other AVS into Docker and deploy it to EigenCompute with one click.

EIGEN and bEIGEN: The System's Dual Token Model

EigenCloud adopts a dual-token model to drive the system operation:

  • EIGEN: Regular "cash", which can be freely traded on exchanges or used for DeFi wealth management.
  • bEIGEN: "Work Certificate", participating in the construction of EigenCloud (such as serving as a "juror") requires staking EIGEN to obtain bEIGEN. Holding bEIGEN signifies a commitment to honest work, and malicious actions will be subject to Slash.

This design separates speculators from builders, increasing system stability.

To prevent collusion among the majority, the system introduces a "forkability" mechanism. The honest minority can initiate a "fork" by burning a portion of the tokens, splitting EIGEN into two versions. The community then chooses which version to support through "money voting," thereby punishing the wrongdoers.

Comparison with ZK Co-processor

EigenCloud shares similarities with the previously hot concept of ZK co-processors, both aiming to migrate complex computations off-chain. However, their technical approaches are different:

  • ZK Co-processor: Similar to a rigorous mathematician, it uses cryptography to 100% prove the computational correctness of objective facts, but cannot handle subjective issues.
  • EigenCloud: More like economists and sociologists, ensuring credible results through economic games and social consensus, capable of handling subjectively verifiable issues.

The silence of the ZK co-processor has inspired EigenCloud: the key to project success lies in finding irreplaceable application scenarios for "off-chain complex computing + on-chain trust."

Strategic Significance of EigenCloud Launch

  1. Telling a new story: Shifting from "re-staking" to "building the verifiable layer for the next generation of the internet" to boost market confidence.

  2. Create Token Demand: Core applications such as EigenDA, EigenVerify, and EigenCompute all require EIGEN tokens to drive actual demand for the tokens.

  3. Lowering the development threshold: EigenCompute significantly reduces the difficulty of developing AVS, which is expected to attract more developers and create a positive ecological cycle.
